AI Dictionary
Terms around AI are notoriously confusing. Here's a list of terminology we use and
what we mean by it.
Artifical Intelligence
Abbreviated to AI, artificial intelligence is a broad term that has been in use since the mid-20th century. It generally refers to any computer program capable of mimicking any facet of human intelligence. When people refer to AI these days, they largely mean neural networks.
General Artificial Intelligence
Generative AI
Large Language Model
Machine Learning
Neural Network
Also known as artificial general intelligence, this term refers to AI with a human level of intelligence. No general artificial intelligence exists, and there are no signs that one is close to being produced.
AI that produces a novel output, such as text, image, audio or video. Generative AI models are usually neural networks trained using machine learning. We abbreviate it to GAI to avoid confusion with general artificial intelligence.
Abbreviated to LLMs, a large language model is AI that is trained on large amounts of text. LLMs are usually neural networks trained using machine learning and might analyse input and/or generate output.
The process of training a computer to recognise patterns with a series of inputs.
A type of computer program that takes input to make and strengthen connections between certain concepts, similar to neurons in a brain. It uses machine learning.
